[Partly a reduplication of Malay gong, gung (see gong n.2); partly an independent echoic formation: cf. gumgum.
The reduplicated form may have come from some Malayan dialect; cf. gonggong barking of dogs, ginggong a ‘Jew's harp’ or similar toy. Cf. G. gonggong, gonggon, Du., Sw. gonggong, Da. gongon, a gong.]
