alchemilla, n. Bot.|ælkəˈmɪlə| Also † alchimilla. [ad. med.L. alchimilla lady's mantle, poss. ad. Arab. iklīl al-malik, lit ‘the crown of the king’, infl. by med.L. alchim-ia alchemy + dim. suffix -illa, from the belief of the alchemists that dew from the leaves of this plant could turn base metals to gold. Adopted as a genus name by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753) I. 123.] Any of numerous herbaceous perennials of the genus Alchemilla of the rose family, whose members are widely distributed in the north temperate zone and mountainous regions of tropical Africa and are distinguished by palmately lobed leaves and cymes of tiny green or yellowish flowers; also Alchemilla, the genus itself.
