[f. gun n. + wale, the gunwale having formerly served to support the guns (cf. quot. 1697 in β). The usual spelling is still gunwale, though the pronunciation (ˈgʌnweɪl) is, at least in Great Britain, never used by persons acquainted with nautical or boating matters.]
