1. In full Gurney cab. A two-wheeled horse drawn cab of a type popular in America in the late 19th century, entered from the rear and fitted with lengthwise seating. Now Hist.
1884Hub 1 Feb. 707/2 The Gurney cab has the driver's-seat in front and the entrance is at the rear of the body. 1885Pall Mall Gaz. 28 Aug. 3/2 The hansom made its appearance in Chicago about a year ago, and threatened to cut out a less elegant vehicle known as a gurney. 1966P. Tamony in Pacific Historian X. 19 As the San Francisco police patrol wagon developed from an open dray-type to a sided-and-roofed vehicle in the 1890s, with its entrance at the rear, and as the ambulance gift of Mr. Fair's daughters in 1894–1895 trotted to calls, it may be assumed that these vehicles were nicknamed after the rear-entrance Gurney Cab, then also a novelty. These are the transferred usages I heard as a boy.

1939P. Tamony in News Let. & Wasp (San Francisco) 2 June 5/1 ‘Gurney’..is used in two senses: it means a patrol-wagon, and indicates the rubber-tired conveyance used in hospitals. 1956New Gould Med.
