[The original form and etymology of the first element are left doubtful by the early instances (hag- appears to be late); the second is taper n.: cf. Ger. kerzenkraut ‘taper-wort’, MDu. tortsecruyt ‘torchwort’.] A plant, the Great Mullein (Verbascum Thapsus).
