[Hind. hartāl for haṭtāl lit. ‘locking of shops’ (Skr. haṭṭa shop, tālaka lock, bolt).]
Organized shutting of shops and cessation of business, to serve, usually, as a protest against government legislation or a political situation, or as an act of mourning.
