Schireff, Gif he beis apprehended with reid hand Justice sall be done within that Sunne. And gif he be taken and apprehended without read hand, Hee salbe put in prison. 1609― Reg. Maj., Quoniam Attach. c. 39 §2 Gif he is takin with reid or hait hand of slauchter. 1878Lea Superst. & Force (ed. 3) 23 note, A murderer was allowed to rebut with his single oath all testimony as to his guilt, unless he chanced to be caught with the red hand.
