hawkweed|ˈhɔːkwiːd| [transl. of L. hierācium = Gr. ἱεράκιον, f. ἱέραξ hawk, falcon; but the ancient application of the name was different (see Liddell and Scott).] The common name for plants of the large genus Hieracium (N.O. Compositæ). Also sometimes loosely applied to other yellow-flowered composites, as Senecio hieracifolius, Picris hieracioides, and the genus Crepis (bastard hawkweed).
