heliodor Min.|ˈhiːlɪəʊdɔə(r)| Also -dore. [a. G. heliodor, f. Gr. ἥλιο-ς sun + δῶρον gift.] A richly coloured variety of golden beryl found in South West Africa.
1913Mineral. Mag. XVI. 362 Heliodor... Trade-name for a golden beryl of gem-quality from German South-West Africa. 1952L. G. Green Lords of Last Frontier (1953) xviii. 185 Heliodore is found only on the barren slopes of Rossing Mountain... Apparently it does not exist anywhere else in the world. German prospectors discovered the first deposit..and the lovely greenish⁓yellow opalescent stones were set in the form of a cross. 1959Chambers's Encycl. II. 281/2 The pink morganite, the golden heliodor and the green emerald are among the most attractive of coloured gems. |
