hernio- comb. form of hernia, as in herniˈology, that part of pathology which treats of hernia, a treatise on hernia. ˌherniolapaˈrotomy [Gr. λαπάρα the flank + -τοµία cutting], ‘the division of the abdominal walls in order to reach a strangulated hernia which has been returned en masse, so that the constricting part may be divided’ (Syd. Soc. Lex.). hernioˈpuncture, ‘the puncture of a hernia by means of a capillary trocar to diminish its size and so facilitate its reduction’ (ibid.). hernioˈrrhaphy Surg. [-rrhaphy], the operation of repairing a hernia and suturing the opening.
