hook-worm Zool. [Cf. G. hakenwurm, mod.L. Uncinaria, f. L. uncīnus hook (both coined by J. A. Fröhlich 1789, in Naturforscher XXIV. 136).] A parasitic nematode worm of the family Ancylostomatidæ, which infests man, other mammals, or birds, using hook-like organs to attach itself to the host's intestinal lining. Hence hook-worm disease = ankylostomiasis; also hookworm-ridden a., infested with hookworms.
