profilin, n. Biochem.|prəʊˈfɪlɪn| [f. pro-1 + filamentous a. + actin n.] A protein which inhibits the polymerization of actin by binding to the monomer.
[1976L. G. Tilney in Jrnl. Cell Biol. LXIX. 55/1 We will refer to the periacrosomal material subsequently as profilamentous actin or ‘profil. actin’.] 1977L. Carlsson et al. in Jrnl. Molecular Biol. CXV. 466 We..suggest that profilactin (qualified, if necessary, by the name of the source) is used as a general term for this non-filamentous form of actin in cells. From this nomenclature we derive the name profilin for the 16,000 molecular weight auxiliary protein (more specifically, spleen profilin for the protein in spleen extracts). 1984Holtzman & Novikoff Cells & Organelles (ed. 3) ii. xi. 285 Some of the proteins, like ‘profilin’, which is widely present, bind to G-actin and inhibit polymerization. 1989Jrnl. Biol. Chem. CCLXIV. 4830/2 Addition of either gelsolin or profilin to PIP [sc. phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate] vesicles does not cause their aggregation. |
