Upanishad|uːˈpænɪʃæd| [a. Skr. upa-nishád, f. upa near to + ni-shad to sit or lie down.] In Sanskrit literature, one or other of various speculative treatises chiefly dealing with the Deity, creation, and existence, and forming a division of the Vedic literature.
