Huygens|ˈhaɪgənz| Also (erron.) Huyghens. The name of Christiaan Huygens (see Huyghenian a.), used, chiefly in the possessive, to designate inventions, principles, etc., devised or enunciated by him, as Huygens' construction, the geometrical construction for finding the position of a wave front by using Huygens' principle; Huygens' eyepiece, a Huygenian eyepiece (see Huyghenian a.); Huygens' principle, a principle of wave propagation, according to which each point on a wave front may be regarded as a source of new secondary waves, and the resultant effect of all these waves constitutes the propagation of the wave front, their envelope at a later time representing a new position of it.
