[Of obscure origin. In Pers. (and Turkish) hailāj, ‘a calculation of astrologers by which they obtain evidence of the length of an infant's life’, ‘a nativity’; said by the Persian lexicographers to be a Greek word, meaning originally ‘fountain of life’. The Pers. equivalent is given as kadbānū, lit. ‘mistress of the house’. In OF. yleg, ilech (Oresme, 14th c.).]
