hæmatoxylin, hem- Chem.|hiːməˈtɒksɪlɪn| [f. mod.Bot. L. hæmatoxylon, -um logwood (f. hæmato- + ξύλον wood) + -in.] A crystalline substance (C16H14O6) obtained from logwood; colourless when pure, but affording fine red, blue, and purple dyes by the action of alkalis and oxygen; its aqueous solution also affords a fluid used for staining vegetable tissues.
