[f. iatro- + chemistry, after the family of mod.L. words beginning iatrochem-, iatrochym- (cf. chemic a. and n.).
These words appear to have originated in the (translated) work of Paracelsus (d. 1541): 1573 I. Dalhemius tr. Paracelsus' Chirurgia Magna I. ii. xiii. 21 Verum quia Iatrochymista [so in Opera Omnia (1658), but here printed latrochymista] sum: vtrumqȝ enim scio & Medicinam & chemiam. They afterwards occur in medical works in L. by other writers, e.g. G. Phædro Opuscula iatro-chemica quatuor (1611); D. Burnet Iatrochymicus, siue de præparatione et compositione medicamentorum chymicorum artificiosa (1616).]
The theory or school of thought that existed in the 16th and 17th centuries and regarded medicine and physiology as subjects to be understood in terms of the chemistry of the time (see chemiatric a.).
1830T. Thomson Hist. Chem. I. v. 201 The most eminent of all the English supporters of iatro-chemistry was Thomas Willis, who was a contemporary of Sylvius.1881Roscoe & Schorlemmer Treat. Chem. III. i. 4 Towards the sixteenth century, the cultivators of this science [sc. alchemy]..exhibited activity mainly in two directions, in the first place in the prosecution of the branch science of metallurgy, and secondly, in the development of iatrochemistry.1909P.
