iberis|aɪˈbɪərɪs| [mod.L. (J. J. Dillenius in Linnæus Systema Naturæ (1735)), prob. f. Gr. Ἴβηρες Iberians, as several species come from Spain, but cf. Gr. ἰβηρίς, L. iberis a kind of cress.] A low-growing herb or sub-shrub of the genus so called, native to southern Europe and western Asia, and bearing flattened heads of small white, pink, or purple flowers; = candytuft.
