A word proposed to describe a stage intermediate between picture-writing and phonetic writing, in which pictures or representations of objects stand not for the objects themselves, but for their names considered merely as phonetic elements, as in a pictorial rebus, or the use made by the Chinese of the sounds of their characters to express the sound of a foreign word. Hence iconoˈmatically adv.; iconoˈmaticism; iconomaˈtography.
