‖ iconostasis Eastern Ch.|aɪkəˈnɒstəsɪs| [eccl. L., a. eccl. Gr. εἰκονόστασις, f. εἰκών icon + στάσις standing, position, station.] The screen which separates the sanctuary or ‘bema’ from the main body of the church, and on which the icons or sacred pictures are placed.
