J. van de Graaff (1901–67), U.S. physicist, used attrib. and absol. to designate a machine devised by him for generating electrostatic charge by means of a vertical endless belt which collects charge at its lower end from needle points connected to a voltage source and carries it to similar points at the top connected to the inside of a metal dome, whose potential is thereby increased; also a particle accelerator based on this machine.
1934Rev. Sci. Instruments V. 18/1 The paper discusses the design and construction of a Van de Graaff electrostatic generator capable of an output of 500 microamperes and more than a million volts. 1961G. R. Choppin Exper. Nuclear Chem. xii. 193 Positive ions..are obtainable in cyclotrons as well as Van de Graaff and linear accelerators. 1973Physics Bull. Dec. 722/1 Both tandem van de Graaffs and cyclotrons currently accelerate a variety of high quality beams. 1980J. W.
