vaterite Min.|ˈvɑːtəraɪt, ˈfɑː-| [ad. G. vaterit (W. Meigen 1911, in Verhandl. d. Ges. deutsch. Naturforscher und Ärzte LXXXII. ii. i. 124), f. the name of H. A. Vater (1859–1930), German mineralogist and geologist: see -ite1.] A relatively rare, metastable form of calcium carbonate, CaCO3, that is polymorphous with calcite and aragonite and crystallizes in the hexagonal system.
