veatchite Min.|ˈviːtʃaɪt| [See quot. 1938 and -ite1.] Any of three polymorphs of a hydrous strontium borate, Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2·B(OH)3·H2O, of which two (veatchite and p-veatchite) are monoclinic and one (veatchite-A) is triclinic.
1938G. Switzer in Amer. Mineralogist XXIII. 411 It seems fitting to name this new borate veatchite after Dr. John A. Veatch, who was the first to detect the presence of borates in the mineral waters of California, on January 8, 1856. 1960Mineral. Mag. XXXII. 500 A mineral from the Permian lower evaporite bed of the Eskdale No. 2 boring in Yorkshire... Single-crystal X-ray work now proves that this mineral is p-veatchite. 1979Amer. Mineralogist LXIV. 362 A third modification of veatchite occurs in Emet colemanite deposit, Kütahya, Turkey, as white cauliflower-shaped nodules associated with colemanite, hydroboracite, realgar, orpiment and montmorillonite. The new mineral is triclinic... Crystals are transparent, colorless... The new modification is named veatchite-A. |
