In full Tell el-Amarna, the modern name of Akhetaten, the site of a city in ancient Egypt built by Amenophis IV in the 14th century b.c. on the east bank of the Nile near Mallawi; used attrib. to designate remains found in this city, esp. certain tablets discovered in 1887 (see quots.).
