violarite Min.|vaɪəˈlɑːraɪt| [f. L. violār-is of violet + -ite1.] A rare isometric sulphide of nickel and iron, Ni2FeS4, occurring in massive form with a violet-grey colour and a metallic lustre.
1924Lindgren & Davy in Econ. Geol. XIX. 318 It has been shown that the ‘polydymite’ from Vermilion, Ontario and Key West, Nevada, is not identical with polydymite... It might conveniently be designated as violarite. 1981Process Mineralogy (Amer. Inst. Mining Engineers) 226 The close association of smythite with pentlandite indicates that its nickel content is derived from nickel liberated during the alteration of pentlandite to violarite. |
