vitrinite|ˈvɪtrɪnaɪt| [f. vitrain + -inite (f. -in1 + -ite1).] One of the three major kinds of maceral that go to make up humic coal, rich in oxygen and characteristic of vitrain.
1935M. C. Stopes in Fuel XIV. 11 It is now proposed to give to the individual ‘macerals’ a distinctive set of descriptive names with the termination -inite... The basis of the grouping is very simple and the names logical; and the whole therefore can easily be built up from: Rock types... Vitrain..Fusain..Clarain..Durain. Macerals... Vitrinite..Fusinite..[etc.]. 1955Sci. Amer. July 62/1 The broadest attack on the problem was launched in 1951 by the British Coal Utilization Research Association, which set out to analyze..a series of vitrinites—bright black coal particles—from typical coals. 1964Fuel XLIII. 123 It is..suggested that the reflectance of vitrinite A occurring in the whole coal may provide the best available index of rank. 1978Nature 7 Dec. 598/1 The most common methods of estimating the degree of thermal alteration [of petroleum source rocks] are based on measurements of the residual insoluble organic material in rocks. Some of the more common methods use..electron spin resonance, kerogen coloration and vitrinite reflectance. |
