vivotoxin Biochem.|ˈvaɪvəʊtɒksɪn| [f. vivo- (cf. vivi-) + toxin.] A substance produced in an infected plant and involved in the disease process (see quot. 1953).
1953Dimond & Waggoner in Phytopathology XLIII. 229/2 To clarify this situation a new term is suggested. A vivotoxin is defined as a substance produced in the infected host by the pathogen and/or its host, which functions in the production of disease, but is not itself the initial inciting agent of disease. 1971Agric. & Biol. Chem. XXXV. 618/2 Vivotoxins are considered to be usually nonspecific to plant species. 1981R. J. Green in M. E. Mace et al. Fungal Wilt Dis. Plants i. 11 Acceptance of the concept of the vivotoxin directed investigators to attempt to demonstrate toxins in the vascular tissues of the infected plants. |
