Used with qualifying phrases to designate various qualities or registers of the voice, as voce di gola |di ˈgola|, a throaty or guttural voice; voce di petto |di ˈpɛtto|, the chest register; voce di testa |di ˈtɛsta|, the head register; formerly, the falsetto voice.

During the first half of the 19th century, however, this traditional Italian manner of singing in the top range fell into disuse, and the expression voce di testa came to refer to the normal, much stronger head voice, falsetto being reserved as a special effect only for the very highest notes.
