volutin Biochem.|ˈvɒljuːtɪn| Also † -ine. [a. G. volutin (A. Meyer Practicum der bot. Bakterienkunde (1903) xiii. 80), f. L. volūt-ans (pres. pple. of volūtāre to roll), specific epithet of the bacterium Spirillum volutans: see -in1.] A basophilic compound containing polyphosphate found in metachromatic granules in the cytoplasm and vacuoles of various micro-organisms and fungi.
