intercooler|ˈɪntəkuːlə(r)| Also inter-cooler. [inter- 2 b.] An apparatus for cooling gas heated by compression, esp. before it is compressed a second time (as in a multi-stage compressor or the cylinders of a super-charged engine).
1900Engin. Mag. XIX. 679 A complete system of jacket water and a very large intercooler are used, the total capacity of the machine being 3,000 cubic feet of free air per minute compressed to 125 pounds' pressure. 1903[see aftercooler]. 1932Chatfield & Taylor Airplane & its Engine (ed. 2) viii. 234 Compressing air by a supercharger..increases its temperature considerably and it is sometimes desirable to cool this air before it reaches the engine. This is accomplished by means of an intercooler which usually takes the form of a small radiator inserted in the air passage between the super-charger and the engine. 1944[see aftercooler]. 1963A. W. Farrall Engin. for Dairy & Food Products viii. 202 The booster compressor..discharges its gas into an intercooler, which in turn is piped to the suction of a standard high-pressure refrigeration machine. 1970Motor Boat & Yachting 16 Oct. 39/2 By installing a type of heat exchanger, called an intercooler, the mixture leaving the turbo-charger is cooled before it enters the cylinder and this increases the efficiency. |
