ionene Chem.|ˈaɪəniːn| [ad. G. ionen (Tiemann & Krüger 1893, in Ber. d. Deut. Chem. Ges. XXVI. 2693), f. Gr. ἴον violet: see -ene.] 1,1,6-Trimethyltetralin, C13H18; a bicyclic oily liquid obtained on elimination of a water molecule from α- or β-ionone.
1894Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXVI. i. 82 When heated with hydriodic acid and phosphorus, it [sc. ionone] loses water, and yields ionene, C13H18, which boils at 106–107° (10 mm.)... It resembles irene very closely. 1933Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. LV. 4680 That ionene is a true 1,1,6-trimethyltetralin is evidenced by its smooth sulphonation and nitration, and by the oxidation products obtained from ionene. 1960Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 3128 Ionene.—This hydrocarbon was prepared in 53% yield from β-ionone. |
