ionogen Physical Chem.|ˈaɪənəʊdʒɪn, aɪˈɒnəʊdʒɪn| [f. iono- + -gen 1.] Any compound which exists as ions when dissolved in a solvent.
1906A. Smith Introd. Gen. Inorg. Chem. xvii. 296 The substances of the three classes which alone are ionized may be designated ionogens... The electrolytic property of ions is only one amongst many special properties of electrolytes, and the majority of these properties are chemical and have nothing to do with electrolysis. Hence we have preferred the more general word ‘ionogen’. 1922Chem. Abstr. XVI. 1890 (heading) Nature of the ionogen linkage. 1935J. N. Friend Text-bk. Physical Chem. II. vii. 217 The undissociated molecules and the ions of an ionogen in aqueous solution constitute a system in equilibrium. 1943Gloss. Terms Electr. Engin. (B.S.I.) 91 The term ‘ionogen’ has been suggested as an alternative to the term ‘electrolyte’ when used with this meaning [sc. a substance which, when dissolved in a specified solvent, produces a conducting medium]. |
