Russisch–Baltischen Gouvernements (1856) 74), f. iso- iso- + πεδιν-ός flat: see -ine5.] A bony material, present as a layer in some fish scales, consisting of sheets of collagenous fibres within a mineralized matrix.
1907E. S. Goodrich in Proc. Zool. Soc. 757 The stratification of the isopedine indicates the lines of growth. 1909― in E. R. Lankester Treat. Zool. IX. 217 The latter [sc. cosmoid scale] is formed of three layers: a middle layer of bone with large vascular anastomosing channels; an inner layer of bony ‘isopedin’, in which the matrix is deposited in successive laminae, and the cells are arranged in parallel planes; and an outer layer of ‘cosmin’. 1920I. Struct. v. 99 The basal layer, which now forms the bulk of the scale, remains acellular but is laced by collagenous fibers coursing in various directions. The resulting bone (called isopedine) is somewhat flexible and soft. |
