A Japanese phrase meaning ‘one quarter’, commonly applied to a silver coin in the form of a thin rectangular plate (with rounded corners), in use before 1871; it was the quarter of a riô or tael, and worth about 1s. 4d. sterling: see also quot. 1900.
The name is still sometimes applied to the quarter of the dollar or yen. As the meaning is ‘one or quarter’, its use in the plural in reference to a number of is an error.
