A female proper name (also Jeanie), pet-form of Jane; used locally in transferred uses. (Cf. Jenny.)
1. Mining. A stationary engine used to let down or draw up trucks on an inclined plane; also = jinny-road, a self-acting inclined plane; = jig 6 d.
1877[see dip n. 5 b]. 1881Raymond Mining Gloss., Jinny-road, a gravity plane underground. 1888Sheffield Gloss., Ginny, an engine by means of which a load is let down an inclined plane.
