juglone Chem.|ˈdʒuː-, ˈdʒʌgləʊn| Also † juglon. [ad. G. juglon (C. Reischauer 1877, in Ber. d. Deut. Chem. Ges. X. 1542), f. L. iūglans walnut: see -one.] 5-Hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, C10H6O3, a reddish-yellow crystalline compound obtained from the green shells of walnuts and having fungicidal properties.
1878Jrnl. Chem. Soc. XXXIV. 233 Juglone (Nucin)... This body, prepared from the green shells of walnuts (Juglans regia), has been analysed by the author, who assigns to it the empirical formula, C36H12O10. 1887Chem. News 9 Nov. 214/1 ‘Juglon’. An extended series of analytical results with regard to this body. 1892Roscoe & Schorlemmer Treat. Chem. III. vi. 138 About 150 grms. of juglone are thus obtained from rather more than 100 kilos. of walnut-shells. 1925Phytopathology XV. 783 Juglone..is an irritant causing violent sneezing and has been found..to be especially valuable as a medicant for skin diseases. 1949E. P. Abraham in H. W. Florey et al. Antibiotics I. xiv. 619 Brissemoret and Michaud (1917) reported the use of juglone in clinical cases of eczema, impetigo, and other skin diseases. 1971R. H. Thomson Naturally Occurring Quinones (ed. 2) iv. 222 Finely powdered juglone is an effective sternutator and like many other quinones has weak fungicidal and bactericidal properties. |
