kalkoentjie, n. S. Afr.|kalˈkʊiŋki, -intʃi| Also -tje, † calcoon. [a. Afrikaans kalkoentjie, f. kalkoen turkey + -tjie, dim. suff.] 1. Any of several African pipits of the genus Macronyx; esp. the Cape longclaw, Macronyx capensis, which has a distinctive red throat and yellow breast.

This handsome lark is common throughout all the open country. 1936E. L. Gill First Guide S. Afr. Birds 78 Cape Longclaw, kalkoentjie, cutthroat lark... A well-known bird; the name Kalkoentjie (little turkey) presumably referring to its red throat. 1937M. Alston Wanderings of Bird-Lover in Afr. i. 21 Mouse-birds I saw too, and Cape bulbuls, and several ‘Kalkoentjes’ or orange-throated long-claws..rose up from the grass as I walked along, and besides, there were chats and warblers. 2. Any of various plants of the family Iridaceae with flowers resembling a turkey's wattles, esp. the gladiolus Gladiolus alatus, native to the Cape, which bears brick-red and yellow flowers.
