kalsilite Min.|ˈkælsɪlaɪt| [f. the letters KAlSi in its chemical formula + -lite.] A rare silicate of potassium and aluminium, KAlSiO4, that is chemically and physically similar to nepheline and occurs in some potassium-rich lavas.
1942A. Holmes in Mineral. Mag. XXVI. 198 Mr. Bannister's results, supplemented by micro-chemical analyses made by Dr. M. H. Hey, are recorded in the communication which follows this paper. The new data indicate that the mineral is..a hitherto unrecognized polymorph of KAlSiO4 for which the appropriately mnemonic name kalsilite is proposed. 1942Bannister & Hey in Ibid. 221 It is proposed to name the new mineral kalsilite after its composition KAlSiO4. 1967Nature 24 June 1322/1 Kalsilite (KAlSiO4) occurs as a major constituent of a large sedimentary xenolith metamorphosed to the sanidinite facies within the gabbro of Brome Mountain, Quebec. Kalsilite is extremely rare and has previously been found only as an igneous mineral in three volcanic areas. 1972M. H. Battey Mineral. for Students ii. 292/2 The ratio of K to Na in nepheline varies and there is a series towards kalsilite KAlSiO4 which is a rare mineral found in certain potassic lavas on the Uganda-Congo border. |
