1957H. Umezawa et al. in Jrnl. Antibiotics (Tokyo) A. X. 188 An antibiotic was isolated from a streptomyces which was assigned to a new species S. kanamyceticus, n. sp. Okami et Umezawa... This antibiotic was named kanamycin. 1958Ann. N.Y. Acad. Sci. LXXVI. 27 Paper chromatography of kanamycin preparations revealed a second antibiotic, designated kanamycin B, which has been isolated and characterized. 1958Observer 3 Aug. 9/4 A new antibiotic, kanamycin, discovered and developed by Professor Umezawa and his colleagues..of Tokyo, is now being marketed in the United States. It is active against staphylococcus... It also appears to be highly effective in acute gonorrhea in males. 1963Brit. Pharmaceutical Codex 414 Toxic effects occur with sufficient frequency to make kanamycin useful only when the infecting organisms are resistant to other antibiotics. 1969H. Smith Antibiotics in Clin. Pract. vii. 97 Chemically, kanamycin is related to neomycin, consisting of two amino sugars linked to a deoxystreptamine. This polybasic water soluble antibiotic in commercial preparations consists..of kanamycin A and B... It is a white crystalline powder dissolving easily in water. 1969Kirk & Othmer Encycl. Chem. Technol. (ed. 2) 42 The kanamycins are produced by selected strains of Streptomyces kanamyceticus. |
