Karadagh, Kara Dagh|ˈkærədɑː| The name of a range of mountains in north-western Iran, used attrib. or ellipt. to denote a thick woollen carpet or rug (orig.) made there and knotted with either a geometrical or a floral pattern.
1900J. K. Mumford Oriental Rugs xi. 180 The Kara Dagh weavings are not often seen in market. 1962C. W. Jacobsen Oriental Rugs 228 If there are any rugs coming to Ardebil or Tabriz as Karadaghs, it will be news to most buyers in Tabriz. What little information is available describes these as being very much like the Caucasian Karabaghs, thick rugs with both geometric and floral designs... The new Ardebil rugs are successors to the Karadaghs. |
