[Presumably related to the earlier synonymous whinyard. The pronunciation with (ŋ) or |ŋg| is vouched for by several instances in rime; that with || is indicated by the spelling whinjer (quot. 1823) and implied by the form of Gael. cuinnsear dagger, sword, which is a loan-word from Sc.]
= whinyard.
