kilo-
a. An arbitrary derivative of Gr. χίλιοι a thousand, introduced in French in 1795, at the institution of the Metric system, as a formative of weights and measures containing 1000 times the simple unit, as kilogram, kilometre, etc.
b. kilo-ampere, kilo-bar [bar n.6 1, 2], kilo-bit [bit n.4], kilo-byte, kilo-curie, kilo-electron volt, kilo-gauss, kilo-hertz, kilo-joule, kilo-parsec. Also kilobuck (joc.) [buck n.8], a thousand dollars.
