The name of Frederick Knoop (1878–1943), U.S. instrument-maker, used attrib. with reference to an indentation test devised by him, in which hardness is measured by the size of the indentation produced in a substance by a pyramidal diamond indenter of specified shape under a known load.
The pronunc. |knuːp| is used by members of the Knoop family.
