1938N. de Basily Russ. under Soviet Rule iv. 153 Practically each republic is administratively divided into provinces or regions (oblast or kraï). These provinces and regions are in turn divided into districts (rayon), towns, and villages. 1951T. Shabad Geogr. U.S.S.R. ii. 46 An oblast or kray is usually organized in such a manner as to include..a well-coordinated economic region centering on an important industrial and commercial center and specializing in the production of some particular commodity, while striving for regional self-sufficiency in the greatest possible degree. Ibid. 47 Krays, which occur only in the Russian SFSR, are identical to the oblasts, but are usually larger in area—the term ‘kray’ is given to those divisions which contain autonomous oblasts. 1967J. P. Cole Geogr. U.S.S.R. vi. 101 In Siberia some krays and oblasts are enormous, and extend from the Trans-Siberian Railway as far as the Arctic Coast. |
