A kind of lace made by darning patterns on net.

The second of Lacis, or subjects in squares, Fig. 3, with counted stitches, like the patterns for worsted-work of the present day. 1875Encycl. Brit. XIV. 183/2 The productions of this art, which has some analogy to weaving, in the early part of the 16th century came to be known as..‘lacis’ in France... With the development of the renaissance of art, free flowing patterns and figure subjects were introduced and worked in lacis. 1953[see filet 1]. 1963Times 1 June 11/6 One development was the introduction of all-white lacis, such as was recorded in the bed furnishings of Mary Queen of Scots with ornament built up in darning stitches on a basis of open-mesh net.

V. 448.] A network of cytoplasm occupying the space between the juxtaglomerular apparatus and the macula densa of a renal corpuscle. Usu. attrib., esp. in lacis cell, one of the cells whose cytoplasmic extensions form the lacis, and which differs from other juxtaglomerular cells in having no cytoplasmic granules.
