lactulose, n. Biochem. and Pharm.|ˈlæktjʊləʊz| [f. lacto- + -ul- + -ose2, perh. after cellulose a. and n.] A synthetic disaccharide of fructose and galactose that is given as a laxative; 4-O-β-d-galactopyranosyl-d-fructose, C12H22O11 . Orig. (Science (1929) 24 May 556/2) called lactoketose.
