[f. L. prōmerit-, ppl. stem of prōmer-ēre (also dep. -ērī) to deserve, merit, also, to earn, gain, win, gain over, hence in Vulgate to earn the favour of, render favourable, propitiate. See pro-1 and merit v.]
1. trans. To win the favour of; to please, gratify, propitiate.
