The name of a village near Mubi in N.E. Nigeria, used attrib. in Lassa fever, an acute febrile virus disease that occurs in tropical Africa with a high mortality rate (first reported at Lassa in 1969); similarly Lassa virus.

The virus produces a fever as high as 107°F, mouth ulcers, a skin rash with small haemorrhages, pneumonia, infection of the heart leading to cardiac failure, kidney damage, and severe muscle aches. 1970Amer.
