Laves phase Metallurgy.|ˈlɑːvəs feɪz| [ad. G. Laves-phase (G. E. R. Schulze 1939, in Zeitschr. f. Elektrochem. XLV. 850/1), f. the name of Fritz-Henning Laves (b. 1906), German crystallographer + phase n.] Any of a group of intermetallic compounds of composition approximately AB2 in which the relative sizes of the A and B atoms are such as to allow a stable packing arrangement with unusually high co-ordination numbers.
