▪ I. lek, v.|lɛk| [? a. Sw. leka to play: see lake v.1 (cf. quot. 1884 s.v. laking vbl. n.1).] intr. of certain birds: To take part in a pattern of behaviour centred upon a lek; hence ˈlekking vbl. n. Also lek n.1, a patch of ground used by groups of birds of certain species, esp. blackcock, during the breeding season, as a setting for the males' display and their meeting with the females; the display itself or the season during which it takes place.
